Tiffany Studios 16" Pansy dash-numbered shade on a special and rare Tiffany Studios
Pepper (aka Gourd or Pumpkin) table base with attached leaf platform
and with original heat cap.
Most of the Pansy shades feature a background
of striated glass, similar to the glass used in the Pine Needle and Grapevine
pattern desk pieces. This exceptional shade has unusual Tiffany glass that is
both mottled and striated glass in green, shading to green/white and almost all
white at the 4" aperture.
The glass for the multi-colored pansy flowers is cut and set to give each petal
and blossom the organic and natural look, as seen in Tiffany's finest shades.
The shade carries a long band TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK tags. It is a
dash-numbered shade with 1448-14 on the third tag. Dash-numbers were reserved
for shades of superior artistic coloration.
The base is a Tiffany masterpiece. It is an intricately designed and
constructed original oil base that was electrified by Tiffany as America
transitioned from kerosene to electricity around 1902.
The original removable oil font has the Tiffany Studios stamped pontil button on the bottom, center. The Duplex burner has been properly modified by Tiffany with a single socket housing. Neither the oil font nor the base were drilled to electrify the lamp.
The rich brown patina, with some green, is in excellent condition. There are
no dents or corrosion to any of the bronze. The base is divided into five
sections. The bottom platform is a cast bronze leafy design repeated five times
around the base. Five heavy bronze ribs encase the body of the plump "Pepper" and a
further five structural arms support the shade. The removable oil font sits in a
structured opening in the center.
The matching and original heat cap (slip cap) is a nice inclusion. Too many
lamps sold today, even by exclusive dealers and auction houses have reproduction
caps.
The cord has been upgraded with period-looking cloth cord and a modern
switch and plug have been mounted in the cord. These are the ONLY non-original
elements of the entire lamp.
